Description
This is a song I wrote titled “Red.” It is about self-acceptance and finding empowerment through community, specifically how I found self-acceptance and empowerment through the autistic community. The song title and references to “wearing red” throughout the song are an homage to how the #actuallyautistic community and allies use the color red in the month of April to represent autism acceptance. I added my illustration of a butterfly at the end to symbolize the growth and positive transformation I have experienced since becoming involved in autistic self-advocacy.
Full song lyrics:
When I was young the stars in my eyes
loooked up at the stars in the sky
Little children know things grown up people don’t
Remember, what was that like
When we wore red
For the fire, and the passion and the courage
We turned our heads
From the liars who say that we’re worthless
And we wore red
The color of our beating hearts
Of our bleeeing hearts unchained
And we wore red
The color of the love flowing through our veins
They say minds like mine just don’t make sense
Hazy fog is all they ever saw
I know that if you look close at hidden places
You will find smiling faces where
We wear red
For the fire, and the passion and the courage
We turn our heads
From the liars who say that we’re worthless
And we wear red
The color of our beating hearts
Of our bleeeing hearts unchained
And we wear red
The color of the love flowing through our veins
